Allentown's Cleveland elementary students remember 9/11

The banner unfurled from the roof of the school on Ninth Street as part of the student body's Sept. 11 commemoration ceremony. The banner also had a picture of Alan Merdinger, the father of school guidance counselor Jill Merdinger. Cleveland Elementary's tribute is one of a several ceremonies taking place in the Lehigh Valley today. At Muhlenberg College, students are placing 2,977 flags – one for every victim of the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93, on the college's front lawn. The idea for the banner came from the school's fifth grade class, which has been corresponding with widows of Sept. 11, asking them questions about their lives after the attacks, said Principal Robert Wheeler.
